What Drives the Cost of a Kitchen Remodel?

Here’s where your money really goes:

  1. Cabinetry (Usually 25–35% of your budget)

There are many options available on the cabinet side of the project. From full custom sets (which are generally what we offer), to stock or semicustom cabinets. We see stock cabinetry ranging from $10k-$30k, and custom cabinetry ranging anywhere from 20K–$40K+ depending on the design style, materials, pullouts and inserts, and layout.

Tip: Always ask what material your cabinets are made from. Plywood boxes and hardwood faces will outlast MDF and particleboard by a long shot.

  1. Countertops

Quartz, granite, butcher block, and solid surface options vary widely. Expect to spend $3K–$10K depending on size and material.

  1. Labor

Labor costs are real, and they’re worth every penny when you hire people who do it right the first time. Skilled trades like electrical and plumbing make up a big chunk of your budget, especially If they are good ones.

  1. Appliances

Appliances aren’t always included, but when they are, set aside $5K–$15K+ depending on brand and number of pieces.

  1. Layout Changes

If you’re moving plumbing, walls, or gas lines, costs climb fast. Not necessarily a bad thing, just be prepared to have the conversation about price. If you are using McGough Design/Build LLC to do your kitchen remodel, then you’ve probably been to website already and viewed the pricing diagram, so you already have a good idea where cost could be.

Should I Remodel All At Once or In Stages?

Some folks ask, “Can I do this in stages???”

You can, but it usually results in higher project costs due to extra trips, etc.

Doing it all at once means:

  • Fewer disruptions
  • Lower labor costs overall
  • Cohesive design

Doing it in chunks means:

  • More flexibility financially
  • You live through the mess multiple times

Pros and Cons of a Kitchen Remodel

Pros:

  • Increases home value (often 50–80% ROI)
  • Improves daily life (storage, flow, lighting)
  • Makes hosting and cooking more enjoyable

Cons:

  • It’s an investment — and sometimes a big one
  • Takes 6–12 weeks on average to complete
  • Living without a kitchen for a while isn’t fun

Common Questions We Get Asked Beside Costs and Timelines:

Q: Are you insured?

The answer is a big YES!!! And!! So are our trade partners. If we take on your project, we will provide you with all of the insurance documents that you would ever need from us.

Q: Is it worth it to remodel before I sell?

That depends. If your kitchen is dated or non-functional, it could help sell the home for you. Buyers tend to look at kitchens first. Just don’t overspend. Mid-range remodels often give the best return.

Q: Can I do some of the work myself?

Sure! Minor demo, painting the walls, or sourcing fixtures can help you cut costs. Just be careful not to void warranties or cause delays.

Final Thought: Spend With Purpose

Whether you spend $30K or $130K, the best remodels come from clear goals, honest budgeting, and solid planning. Don’t let someone upsell you just to pad a quote. Know what you want, and why you want it.

At McGough Design/Build, we’ve remodeled dozens of kitchens in and around Texarkana. We start with design first, so everything has a plan and a purpose. And we only work with trade partners who we’d trust in our own homes.
